Life in Departure Bay History

The Pacific Biological Station at Deparure Bay was established in 1908 by Rev.George Taylor & is the oldest fisheries research center on the Pacific coast of Canada. PBS has been crucial to the study of fish population & salmon stock distribution since inception. Beginning with a single wooden building, the Station has grown into a complex of more than 22 structures, including laboratories, offices, and a wharf for research vessels. Approximately 300 employees in Science & the Fisheries Protection Program of Fisheries and Oceans Canada are employed at PBS.
